What do leadoff hitter for the Orioles, Brian Roberts, Reds center fielder Ken Griffey, Reds closer Danny Graves, Red Sox pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Mike Timlin, Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Tennis player Roger Federerhave and many more celebrity sports stars have in common?

They have all taken to wearing the latest performance enhancing eyewear available. Not some new set of sunglasses but scientifically developed sports contact lenses. Known as performance-enhancing contact lenses, they were designed to help hitters pick up the seams on the ball better and to protect the eyes from the sun. "They're almost like wearing sunglasses without wearing sunglasses," Roberts says. "I could tell such a huge difference right away that I was willing to give them a shot." Brian Roberts first tried on his new contact lenses about an hour before the Orioles' last spring training game in Florida. He ripped three hits on a day his teammates groused about the difficulties of seeing the ball in the bright sun shining from a cloudless sky. The University of Miami has 20 athletes on its football, baseball, tennis and track teams wearing them.

The lenses come in two variations, gray-green and amber to suite different types of sports. The gray-green lenses are best suited to stationary sports like golf whereas the amber lenses are best suited to speed sports like baseball, tennis, soccer etc.

The gray-green lenses allow golfers to better differentiate the shades of green on a golf course. Golfer Justin Leonard has commented that with the gray-green lenses he is able to separate out every blade of grass.
Baseball players benefit most from the amber lenses because amber blocks out blue light which is called "visual noise" by vision experts while the red colors, such as a baseball's seams, are accentuated.
